Chichester is a district in the county of West Sussex in England . The administrative seat is the city of Chichester ; other important places are Midhurst , Fishbourne , Selsey and Westhampnett . The town charter and privileges of the City of Chichester only apply to an area of approximately 10.6 km².
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was created from the merger of the Municipal Borough of Chichester, the Rural Districts Midhurst and PetworthRural and part of the Rural District Chichester.
