Alfred "Chico" Alvarez (born February 3, 1920 in Montreal ; † August 1, 1992 in Las Vegas (Nevada)) was an American jazz trumpeter who played as a soloist in the Stan Kenton band for around 10 years .

Life

Alvarez was a native Canadian but grew up in Los Angeles . In addition to trumpet, he also learned piano and violin. From 1941 to 1943 he was a soloist in the Stan Kenton Band, to be heard on titles like "Machito" or "Harlem Holiday", and also after his military service in World War II until 1951. He also played with Red Norvo , Benny Carter and in the band by Charlie Barnet . In 1952 he founded a piano shop in Hermosa Beach near Los Angeles, to which he devoted himself more and more. He recorded with Patti Page and Nat King Cole and played with various Latin music bands, for which he also wrote pieces. In 1958 he moved to Las Vegas , where he worked in show orchestras in the 1960s and 1970s. a. Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan accompanied.

He should not be confused with the Cuban singer, bandleader and disc jockey Chico Alvarez (Ernesto Alvarez Peraza) in New York, who has his own Latin music radio show there.
