Hoplite representation on the Chigi jug (detailed view)

As Chigi Vase is a proto black- pot (a so-called Olpe hereinafter) v to 640th Was made. The so-called " Chigi painter ", who got his emergency name from this vase of names, is regarded as a painter . The piece is 26.2 cm high and was found in Veji ( Etruria ). Today it is in the Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome .

A special feature is the depiction on it: The shoulder of the Chigi jug shows the oldest known depiction of a hoplite - phalanx . The shields of the individual fighters are also clearly visible, including Gorgoneia , a bull and two birds. The meaning of these symbols is controversial. Other depictions on the Chigi jug show the judgment of Paris , a cavalcade with a chariot, a lion hunt, and a hare and fox hunt.

The Chigi jug marks one of the highlights of Corinthian vase painting thanks to its polychromy (many colors), its very precise and very fine lines and the stories it depicts.
