The Chilcotin River is a 235 km long right tributary of the Fraser River in southern British Columbia , Canada . It drains the arid basin landscape of the Chilcotin Plateau , which extends between the Fraser River and the southern Coast Mountains . The Chilcotin River has its origin in the Itcha Range . It flows mainly in a southeastern direction and flows into the Fraser River about 22 km above Gang Ranch .

Course of the river

The upper reaches of the Chilcotin River is located in Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park . It flows south past secluded Itcha Lake . The main tributaries are the Chilanko River , Chilko River, and Big Creek , all from the right. On the upper and middle course of the river, especially the 12 km below Itcha Lake , there are several leisurely stretches of the river that wind through marshland. Chicotin Falls is a small waterfall about 14 miles downstream from the source at the end of a small gorge. The Chilcotin Lake , a small lake, located 44 km upper stream of the Chilko estuary.

The confluence of the Chilko River and Chilcotin River is one of the atypical cases in which the much richer river flows into the smaller river. Below the mouth of the Chilko River, the Chilcotin River forms a fairly large and muddy river. It is approximately 83 km from the Chilko tributary to the mouth of the Chilcotin River. The Chilcotin River flows through three large canyons, Bull Canyon (in Bull Canyon Provincial Park ), Big Creek Canyon and, below the Big Creek confluence, Farwell Canyon , before it flows into the Fraser River.
