Children on the Edge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Children on the Edge is a charity that works primarily with vulnerable children in crisis areas who are without parental care. The organization is based in Chichester .

history

The organization was founded (initially under the name Romanean or East-European Relief Drive ) in 1990 by Anita Roddick as part of the foundation of her company The Body Shop . After the fall of the Ceaușescu regime, photos of the conditions in Romanian orphanages went around the world. Anita Roddick visited these homes and, on her return, gathered volunteers from her home in Littlehampton to go to Hălăuceşti in the north of the Republic of Moldova . 4,000 children were examined for their health in a series of medical tests.

The campaign for Romanian orphans became a global aid organization . Initially, the association supported three orphanages in Romania; since 1992 the group has also been active in Albania . Roddick traveled to Kosovo with her Head of Communications & Marketing, Elisabeth Weyermann, and opened a school in Cabra, near Pristina . In 1994 a school for blind children was founded in Sarajevo .

In 1999, thousands of Kosovar refugees came to southern Albania. The organization helps to rebuild schools and communities there.

The organization is now also active in Burma , Indonesia , Malaysia and Africa . Children on the Edge has been an independently registered charity since 2004.
