plane

The aircraft involved in the accident was a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 (DC-9-82), which was 8 years old at the time of the accident. The machine was fully assembled in 1985 at McDonnell Douglas' plant in Long Beach (California) and delivered new to CAAC Airlines on October 7, 1985 . After the splitting of the only airline of the People's Republic of China into a number of new airlines, the machine went to China Northern Airlines on May 1, 1988 . The aircraft had the factory number 49355 and the model serial number 1224 . The machine was certified with the aircraft registration B-2103 . The twin- engined , narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217A engines.

the accident

The plane took off from Shenzhen Bao'an Airport at 11:50 a.m. local time for the hour-long flight to Fuzhou-Yixu Airport. The landing was scheduled for 12:50 p.m. An IGS / DME approach was carried out. At 12:32 p.m., the crew informed air traffic control that they were preparing for landing. At that time it was raining and visibility was four kilometers. The pilots received clearance to land on runway 08. Despite the poor visibility, the crew began the approach to Fuzhou, which resulted in the aircraft deviating significantly to the right of the approach route. Instead of making a missed approach , the pilots attempted to correct course while simultaneously lowering the plane further. Two kilometers from the runway, the machine was 350 meters to the right of the approach baseline. At a height of 20 meters above the ground, the pilots decided to abort the approach. They increased the thrust and retracted the landing flaps . However, the machine continued to sink, so that the flight captain decided without further ado to touch down the machine that was just flying over the runway. He took the thrust back and the machine touched down in 1983 meters behind the runway threshold. There was no longer enough runway length to bring the machine to a standstill. The DC-9-82 overshot the runway end and slid into a pond 385 meters beyond. The fuselage was broken into three parts. Two passengers were killed and another 10 people injured.

Accident investigations

The investigation into the accident revealed that the flight captain had violated the Fuzhou-Yixu airport approach procedure and did not cooperate adequately with the air traffic controller.
