China is a city in Jefferson County , Texas . It has 1,112 inhabitants (as of 2000 ) and an area of 3.4 km².
The city name is derived from the Chinaberry trees ( Melia azedarach ).
history
In 1860, which was Railway Texas and New Orleans Railroad completed. A point of water supply for the steam locomotives under the name China Grove was set up near a group of Chinaberry trees . In 1887 a post office was set up there. After its closure, a post office was rebuilt, this time under the name China , in 1893.
Nashland was founded three kilometers east of China and had 174 inhabitants in 1900. In 1906 the water supply and the post office were moved there. Since the railway company wanted to keep the name China , the place was renamed.
In 1939 petroleum was discovered in the south of the village . The population was around 200 at the beginning of the 1950s, around 1,350 in the mid-1980s, 1,144 in 1990 and 1,112 in 2000.
