Chinantequilla (also San José Chinantequilla ) is a town in the Mixe district of the Mexican state of Oaxaca . It is located in the municipality of Totontepec Villa de Morelos .

The place has about 507 inhabitants (according to the last census) and is about 1160 meters above sea level. The residents speak Mixe and Castilian . Infrastructural improvements in the region have recently made San José Chinantequilla more accessible.
history
Little information is available on the origin of quinante quilla. It is believed that San José Chinantequilla was one of the last places in the region to be founded by the Mixe and is therefore a relatively young settlement. The Mixe were a warlike people who fought numerous battles with both the Zapotecs and the Spanish. The latter also called them the undefeated .
Location and surroundings
Chinantequilla is located in the north of the state of Oaxaca about 85 km from the capital Oaxaca de Juarez . The region is also called Sierra Mixe after the indigenous inhabitants, borders the highlands and includes peaks up to 2,500 meters. The climatic conditions are accordingly diverse.
