Sir John Chippendale "Chips" Lindley Keswick (* 2. February 1940 in London ) is an English entrepreneur and since June 2013 CEO of Premier League clubs frequently Arsenal .

Life

Chips Keswick was born on February 2, 1940 as the son of Sir William Keswick (1903-1990) and his wife Mary Lindley in the Scottish entrepreneurial dynasty of Keswick . His grandfather was the British Conservative politician Henry Keswick . After graduating from Eton College and Aix-Marseille University , Keswick began working in the family's businesses. For example, he started working at Hambros Bank in 1968, where he continued to climb the hierarchy. In 1986 he was appointed chairman and remained in this position until it was sold to the French banking group Société Générale in 1998. At the same time, he was director of various companies during this time, primarily in the banking sector and in industry.

The following is a list of companies with the years in which Keswick served as their director: Anglo American (1995-2001), Bank of England (1993-2001), Edinburgh Investment Trust (1992-2001), IMI plc (1994-2003) , Investec Bank plc (2000-2010), Investec PLC (2002-2010), Persimmon plc (1984-2006) or Ernest Oppenheimer & Sons (1993-2013). He also held leading roles in several companies within the De Beers Group. From 1973 to 1995 he was also director of the Children's Country Holidays Fund .

On 24 November 2005 Keswick was appointed director of Premier League clubs frequently Arsenal appointed and remained about seven and a half years in this office. In June 2013 he succeeded Peter Hill-Wood as chairman of the football club. Hill-Wood, who had previously been on the board of the association since 1962, had held the position of chairman of the board since 1982 and took over from his father, Denis Hill-Wood . His grandfather, Samuel Hill-Wood, was chairman of the board from 1927 and 1929 to 1936 and from 1946 to 1949.

After four years as CEO, Chips Keswick was re-elected as CEO at the General Assembly of Arsenal FC in October 2017 with the help of the main shareholder Stan Kroenke . Kroenke also helped his son Josh Kroenke , who had been on the board since December 2013, to get re-election, which caused incomprehension in the British media and displeasure among supporters. The general meeting was described by the media as "embarrassing" and Keswick, who did not know how to deal with the angry shareholders who were present, as "arrogant", with calls for Keswick to resign. Keswick himself has no shares in the football club.

Private

His brothers Henry (* 1938) and Simon Keswick (* 1942) also hold leading positions in the family businesses. Among others at Jardine Matheson Holdings , Jardine Lloyd Thompson and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group .

Chips Keswick has been married to Lady Sarah Mary Ramsay (* 1945), daughter of Simon Ramsay, 16th Earl of Dalhousie , since 1966 . The couple has three sons David, Tobias (* 1968) and Adam (* 1973).

Keswick is a member of the Gentlemen's Clubs White’s Club and City University Club .

He supported the lobby group Business for Sterling and sat on the board of Conservative corporate donors . In December 2013, those responsible for the Better Together campaign , the supporters of Scotland remaining in the UK (see referendum on Scottish independence 2014 ), published a list of major donors, on which Keswick was listed with a sum of 23,000 pounds .
