Chobits ( Japanese ち ょ び っ ツ Chobittsu ) is a manga by CLAMP , which is a love story between Hideki Motosuwa, a ronin (someone who did not pass the university entrance exam on the first try), and Chi, a Persocom (Japanese abbreviation for Personal computer ). Chobits was also implemented as an anime .

action

The setting is Tokyo in the near future. Persocoms, computers with human appearance, are everywhere at this point. The student Hideki Motosuwa, the protagonist, cannot afford such a machine. However, by chance he finds a well-preserved specimen in the garbage that he initially thinks is a human corpse. After activating the Persocom in his apartment, he realizes that the computer has not saved any data (which is roughly equivalent to a loss of all memories). The debugging of Persocoms not succeed, because he seems to be a special example. The only word the computer can initially speak is "Chi", so Hideki decides to make this word the name of the female computer. The search for where Chi comes from and who she is begins begins. Meanwhile, the Persocom learns to speak in stages and also through mistakes to cope with the world.

The manga deals with the complicated relationship between Persocoms and their users and the question of when a machine is still a machine for modern humans and when it is a living being for him. In the course of the plot it turns out that Chi is one of two Chobits , a Persocom without an operating system, but with outstanding intelligence. You can also experience feelings like fear, pain, or love. Chi is concentrating more and more on the question of whether there is a person who loves her, a person for her alone, and hopes that Hideki is that person for her. She finds herself in the main character of the children's book The City With No People , the story of which actually shows strong parallels to Chi's life.

In the end, Hideki confirms that he loves her.

Characters

Hideki Motosuwa
He's a very nice and helpful person, even if he's not exactly successful in school. He sees Chi as more than just a Persocom, but does not admit it to himself for a long time. Hideki would do anything to protect the people who are important to him. He's a good friend and (mostly) reliable. Finally he owns the three Persocoms Chi, Sumomo and Kotoko. After a while he develops feelings for chi.
Chi / Elda
Chi is one of the two Chobits and therefore a very special Persocom. Unlike the others, she can determine her own actions and also thinks about what is happening. In Hideki she hopes to find the "person who is only meant for me". Chi has another self, which is always with her in her mind and helps her.
Freya
Freya is Chi's “twin sister”, her story is about the fact that she has feelings for her “father” (that is, her builder), but doesn't tell anyone about them. Over time, it breaks precisely because of these feelings, which ultimately leads to it giving up its function. Your "heart" is taken up by Chi, which could possibly cause the same pain. From that moment on, she lives on in Chi and occasionally appears as an inner voice in her thoughts.
Hiromu Shinbo
In the beginning he is Hideki's neighbor and helps him find his way around. Shinbo is also very helpful and with his Persocom Sumomo he is always available to Hideki with words and deeds. Later he runs away with their two teachers, Takako Shimizu, because her husband only takes care of his Persocom and she is alone.
Minoru Kokubunshi
Although he is only in the 7th grade (1st grade of middle school), he is already a genius when it comes to persocoms and technology. In his huge property, several self-made Persocoms ensure order and the well-being of the residents. Yuzuki is his personal assistant and also a self-made Persocom. It is very important to Minoru because it was designed based on the model of his late older sister and is, so to speak, a substitute for her.
Chitose Hibiya
The friendly landlady is not a blank slate, even if she seems like that at the beginning. She used to be the chief developer of the forbidden and secret Chobits series with her husband Ian and is always involved in the later plot. She also draws and writes the picture book The City With No People in the hope that Chi will remember her previous life before all data was lost.
Hiroyasu Ueda
He is the owner of "Tirol", a pastry shop where Chi also worked for a while. What makes him extraordinary is his marriage to a Persocom, which ended in a tragic accident. His Persocom pushed him away from a car and saved his life, but was destroyed in the process. Mr. Ueda is usually friendly and reserved.
Takako Shimizu
She is the teacher of Shinbo and Hideki at the funding institute. Most of the time she has to wake Hideki to teach him something. Her husband only loved his Persocom and hardly paid any attention to her. Since Shinbo accepted her, she seems more relaxed and happy.
Sumomo
Is Shinbo's mobile Persocom. She often tries to help Chi, but mostly fails because of Chi. She is afraid of Hideki but later has to live with him for a while.
Yumi Omura
Is Hideki's work colleague. She falls in love with him at the beginning of the series. But later it turns out that she is Mr. Ueda's ex-girlfriend. She broke up with him because he was once married to a Persocom and she was afraid of being compared to this one. But the two find each other again.
Yuzuki
Yuzuki is Minorus Persocom. It was modeled after his sister Kaede, who died years ago. She really wants to be like her and help Minoru.
Zima and Dita
Are two Persocoms that were built to destroy Chi. However, Zima abandons this purpose and prevents Dita from destroying Chi.
