Choi Min-su (born May 1, 1962 in Seoul ) is a South Korean actor .

Life

Choi Min-su comes from a family of actors. His father Choi Moo-ryong was a popular actor in the 1960s and 1970s. His mother, Kang Hyo-shil, was a film and stage actress. His maternal grandparents were the director, actor and singer Kang Hong-shik and the actress and singer Jeon Ok . Choi Min-su has three siblings. His father married several times. He has another half-sister from his father's second marriage to actress Kim Ji-mee and a half-brother and half-sister from his third marriage. His aunt is an actress in North Korea . In 1994, Choi married the Canadian-Korean beauty queen June Elizabeth Kang. The couple have two sons, Christian (Yu-seong) and Benjamin (Yu-jin).

In 1985 Choi graduated from Seoul Arts College and began his career in theater. He had his first film role in 1986 in Sin-ui Adeul ( 신의 아들 'Son of God'). He had his breakthrough in 1990 in Chung Ji-yung's film North Korean Partisan In South Korea , for which he received numerous acting awards. In 1992 he starred in the comedy Marriage Story . It was the first film in South Korean film history to be financed by a large conglomerate, Samsung Entertainment. In 1995 he played the leading role in the television series Sandglass , which became a huge success in Asia and is considered to be one of the beginnings of the Korean wave , South Korea's successful cultural export. In South Korea, the series had ratings of over 60 percent. This was followed by other leading roles in Deep Water Mission (1999) and Libera Me (2000). However, his career suffered a setback when he attacked an elderly man. The man did not press charges and Choi was not investigated further, but Choi's behavior was publicly condemned. Choi then retired from the film business in the mountains for a year. His career could never fully recover from the scandal. However, he still has major roles in television series.
