action
Oh Ji-soo is a model student. He is never absent and has good grades. His goal is to study at one of the SKY universities and get a well-paying job. But he leads a life that nobody knows about. He runs a security service for prostitutes to finance his life. He does not have a good relationship with his father and therefore lives alone. He does his job in collaboration with his partner Mr. Lee. Ji-soo takes over the mediation and Mr. Lee protects the women in case of incidents. But Mr. Lee doesn't know who Ji-soo actually is and he uses a cell phone that distorts his voice and pretends to be an uncle . Since prostitution is banned in South Korea , his job could be viewed as pimping and would be illegal. But so far everything has gone well for Ji-soo. One of his clients is his classmate Seo Min-hee. Min-hee doesn't know anything about the uncle's identity either, and Ji-soo doesn't have much to do with Min-hee at school. He is a loner and respects the lives of others.
When the rich classmate Bae Gyu-ri enters Ji-soo's life, however, things take a turn. Class teacher Cho is always a little concerned about his model students. Gyu-ri is also a model student, but unlike Ji-soo, she is extroverted and popular. Cho introduces them and wants Ji-soo and Gyu-ri to work together in the after -school club for social issues . Since Ji-soo has fallen in love with Gyu-ri, he accepts. They meet in a café at the weekend. Ji-soo therefore closes the security service for one day, and Mr. Lee should not accept any orders. But Min-hee is not prepared to take a day off and forego money. She takes on an assignment from someone who is on the blacklist. The contractor wants revenge on Mr. Lee, holds Min-hee and threatens her. At first, nobody reacts to their calls for help. But Ji-soo receives a message on his smartphone. He leaves the meeting with Gyu-ri and speaks to the kidnappers. He threatens them that the police will come. At first they don't believe him, since Min-hee is also guilty of prostitution. But the police actually come. Min-hee can slip away. However, is discovered by Inspector Lee as she gets into the elevator. After looking at the surveillance camera, she is sure that she is still a minor.
Gyu-ri is very interested in Ji-soo's "part-time job". She also wants to earn money. She hates her parents, who are only interested in work and see Ji-soo only as a successor, not as a daughter. Gyu-ri always follows him. The next day of school she sees her in sleep early in the morning in the classroom. She takes his work phone and cracks the password. This is how she learns everything. She plays cat-and-mouse with Ji-soo, who looks for his cell phone everywhere and uses an old cell phone to tell Mr. Lee to stop the service until further notice. She does not reveal who has the cell phone and makes demands on him. Finally she visits him at home. From the toilet she calls him that his cell phone is at school. As a result, he leaves the house and she is left alone. She wants to steal his money, but cannot open the suitcase. Suddenly, Ji-soo's father appears in the apartment and Gyu-ri hides. He discovers the money, opens the suitcase and takes everything with him. Gyu-ri tries to stop him and a chase ensues. Ji-soo meets the two of them. His father can escape. But he now realizes that Gyu-ri had his cell phone the whole time.
She only wants to give it back to him if she can get on with him, which Ji-soo refuses. Meanwhile, the girls are getting more and more restless because they cannot work. One of them therefore puts out a feeler for a new protector in case of emergencies. Meanwhile Gyu-ri accompanies Ji-soo to Ulsan to find his father and get the money back. She feels guilty about him. You can catch the father, but he invested all the money in a cryptocurrency . Behind this is a hoax and you have to watch how 90% of the money is gone all at once. He returns to Seoul buckled. He can no longer pay Mr. Lee and his business is still on hold. Meanwhile, Mr. Lee is repeatedly visited by Min-hee, who wants to keep working and wants to pay him directly. But he refuses and advises Min-hee to stop altogether, since she has had an anxiety disorder and panic attacks since the last incident.
Gyu-ri wants to lend Ji-soo money to continue his work and to be involved in it. But he still refuses. At school, he clearly slacked off and only got a bad score in preparation for the midterm exams. He then hits his classmate Chae-bin in the face, who made fun of his poor performance, and accepts Gyu-ri's proposal. Min-hee's boyfriend, Ki-tae, who previously had a clash with Ji-soo when he was looking for his cell phone, gives Chae-bin advice on how to finish Ji-soo without Gyu-ri noticing. Gyu-ri is practically inviolable. She is considered an insider of the school and is popular everywhere. Above all, she gets along very well with the judo team. Therefore, they prepare various plans on how to mentally harm Ji-soo without the Gyu-ri becoming suspicious.
production
In April 2019, Netflix announced the production of Extracurricular . The script comes from the young writer Jin Han-sae, son of the drama writer Song Ji-na. Directed by veteran Kim Jin-min, who shot other successful dramas such as Time Between Dog and Wolf (2007). Producer Yoon Sin-ae described the series as a story about teenagers who destroy their lives by making wrong choices. Since the series is about high school students, the main roles are mostly young, aspiring actors. Kim Dong-hee was previously known from the series SKY Castle (2018) and Itaewon Class (2020). Jung Da-bin has been on television since she was three and became known as a child actress. For Park Ju-hyun it is her first big role. Nam Yoon-su was previously featured in web series. The other roles of teacher Cho, Mr. Lee Whangchul and Commissioner Lee Hae-gyeong are played by the well-known actors Park Hyuk-kwon, Choi Min-soo and Kim Yeo-jin. Kim Yeo-jin is the wife of director Kim Jin-min.
Filming ended on August 6, 2019 in Seoul .
Screenwriter Jin Han-sae said in an interview that the series was inspired by his own experiences while attending high school in New Zealand . It became clear to him that students live in "different universes" even though they attend the same school. He started working on the script in 2018 after reading a news article about arrested students. Ultimately, he wanted to discuss why crimes are bad and wanted to find an answer through uncomfortable and painful topics. He focused on the topics of young people and prostitution .

reception
The series was received in the media as a “deep” and “dark” high school drama. Nathalie Tomada of The Philippine Star wrote that fans of typical Korean drama series such as Boys over Flowers or The Heirs should be prepared for a surprise and a shock. Joan MacDonald of Forbes writes that extracurricular was described as a youth crime thriller, but the series is much darker than most youth dramas. The characters are not developed according to good and bad, but different students are portrayed with moral rejection. Ji-soo is the main character but not a hero. He's trying to survive by breaking the law. Kim Dong-hee succeeds in playing the frightened Ji-soo, while Park Ju-hyun, as a newcomer, strongly transports the sociopathic tendencies and unexpected pity of her character.
Director Kim Jin-min said he was shocked by the script. Most high guilt drama would not deal with such crime. According to him, the series is about responsibility: "The core message of the story is that we accept that everyone can make mistakes - but what follows after that defines what kind of person we are."
The criminal case Nth Room (n 번방 사건 ) was referenced for the publication of the series . This caused outrage in the population and the media in March 2020. The case is about the sexual exploitation of young women, including minors, by a young man who the doctor called and pornographic content from 2018 to 2020 over a Telegram - Chat informed.
John Serba from Decider describes the tension of the series as if it were inspired by Bong Joon-ho ( Parasite , 2019). He gives a clear recommendation and names Park Hyuk-kwon as dazzling and brilliant in the role of the trust and class teacher.
