course

The Chongwe in red

The Chongwe catchment area can be divided into two different areas: a mountainous lower part and the relatively flat upper part. The terrain in the upper part is between 1000 and 1300 meters above sea level, while the lower Chongwe ranges from around 1300 meters (with peaks up to 1500 meters) to the Zambezi at 330 meters.

The river has its source at Chisamba, halfway between Lusaka and Kabwe at about 1150 m. Its course is in a south-easterly direction. In its upper reaches it crosses predominantly small-scale areas. It flows with a slight gradient towards the edge of the central plateau. He reaches the city of Chongwe . A good 30 km further on, the landscape changes and the river, in the now mountainous area, gets a higher gradient. It flows through deepening gorges into the Zambezi Valley until it finally flows into it. It flows into the Zambezi directly at Mana Pools and forms the border of the Lower Zambezi National Park .

Hydrology

The flow rate of the river was measured at the outlet of the upper Chongwe catchment area in m³ / s (values read from the diagram).

tourism

Its valley is a popular holiday and weekend destination for the people of Lusaka. Its banks are almost paved with lodges and camps. In its lovely manageability, its valley is a sharp contrast to the wildness of the Zambezi Valley into which it reaches.
