Choir management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Choir management is a sub-area of music management and cultural management and describes the strategic and organizational management of a choir . In choir management, the structural foundations within a choir are created on which the artistic work can build and develop. Professional teamwork between choir management and musical direction is essential for the performance of a modern choir. Choir management can refer to the leadership functions in the choir as well as the people who exercise this function and who need corresponding choir management skills.

Many in this profession are choir singers themselves and because of an acute need - i.e. rather unplanned - they joined the management of their ensemble after a while . In Germany, music and cultural management can be studied as a university degree with a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree . Additional qualifications in the field of choir management can be obtained in Germany. External impact

quality control

Since music and culture are economic factors, choir managers are faced with the task of positioning their choirs with cultural-political, cultural and artistic goals in the context of political and economic competition for benefits. In an increasingly pluralistic society with its increasing commercialization , choir management has received increasing attention.

Often parts of the choir management are carried out by choir conductors. This is also the case with Simon Halsey , chief conductor of the Rundfunkchor Berlin :

“That is why a large part of the work of a choir director consists of activities that have nothing to do with the music itself - without which the music could not take place at all. […] Concert programs have to be planned, sheet music ordered, rooms rented and furnished, funds raised, posters printed, tickets sold, the singers themselves also entail a certain administrative burden. […] I also spend half of my time organizing and planning, many hours every day; and I like to do that. "
