Chris Knight (born June 24, 1960 in Slaughters, Kentucky ) is an American singer and songwriter of alternative country .

Life

Chris Knight grew up in the mining town of Slaughters, Kentucky, USA. As a three-year-old he wanted a plastic guitar for Christmas - and at 15 he was teaching himself dozens of John Prine songs on his older brother's guitar . After graduating from Western Kentucky University with a degree in Agricultural Sciences, he worked for ten years as an auditor and consultant in the field of reclamation and reclamation of land exposed to mining pollution. This activity shapes his songs to this day, as does his growing up in rather poor circumstances: his work is permeated by characters who have lost their country, live in trailer parks , who never had a chance or who can no longer find their way in changed circumstances.

In 1986 he heard Steve Earle on the radio - it changed his life fundamentally. Because under this influence he started to write songs. It was another six years before he went to Nashville , where he immediately won the Songwriter's Night competition at the legendary Bluebird Cafe . That also earned him a record deal - with the mini label Bluewater Music. The producer, who found out about Chris Knight in Nashville, was recruited by Decca Records shortly afterwards - and took the unknown songwriter with him. So Knight's debut was released in 1998 by Decca. When the CD came out, Knight was back in a trailer in his hometown. But his name soon became known in the alternative country scene, mainly in Texas - and in Europe. Even after his first publications, he was considered a talented author and composer who repeatedly managed to walk a rare tightrope: Chris Knight tells extremely concise, well-structured stories about real people, but packs them into catchy melodies and thoroughly catchy song structures that in the singer-songwriter - Genre are rare.

Knight first became known to a larger audience through his own publications. It was his songs that were recorded by other artists and thus gave him a reputation: Confederate Railroad , John Anderson , Fred Eaglesmith and Randy Travis used his compositions. His most famous song was She Couldn't Change Me , which became a hit in the version of Montgomery Gentry . Because he was particularly popular in Texas, Governor Rick Perry made him an Honorary Texan.
