Christopher A. Viehbacher

Christopher A. Viehbacher (also Chris Viehbacher ; born March 26, 1960 ) is a German - Canadian pharmaceutical manager. From 2008 to 2014 he was CEO of Sanofi .

Life

Viehbacher has Canadian and German citizenship. He studied at the University of Ottawa , Canada and graduated as a chartered accountant .

In 1983 he was employed by the auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). In 1988 he moved to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). He was Head of GSK France and North American Head of GSK until November 2008. After losing to Andrew Witty in his application for the chief post in 2007 , he moved to Sanofi-Aventis as head of December 1, 2008 (since 2011 Sanofi ). The Sanofi Board fired Viehbacher from this position on October 29, 2014.

Viehbacher is Deputy Head of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) in Belgium . He is chairman of the biotech company Genzyme and a board member of Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). In 2003 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . He is Chairman of the CEO Roundtable on Cancer .

In addition to German and English, Viehbacher speaks fluent French. He has three children with his wife. In 2010 he had an income of over six million euros .
