Christian August Langguth (born December 26, 1754 in Wittenberg , † February 9, 1814 in Wittenberg) was a German physician and physicist.

Life

Born as the son of the Wittenberg medical professor Georg August Langguth , he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg on October 11, 1757 and switched to the University of Leipzig on May 27, 1778 . Returning to Wittenberg, he acquired the degree of master's degree on April 30, 1779, and received his doctorate on April 22, 1779 as a doctor of medicine. From October 12, 1781, he taught as an associate professor for obstetrics, particularly natural history and the art of childbirth. In 1790 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

However, since the planned institute for obstetrics was not going anywhere, he switched to the philosophical faculty as an adjunct on May 29, 1797 . After the death of Johann Daniel Titius , he took over the full professorship of physics on May 3, 1797 by the electoral directive and retained his additional medical professorship. In his lectures he dealt with physical geography and above all natural history.

Through inheritance, he came to his father's collection, which he diligently increased and found a very useful entry into reading lessons as Langguth collections. In 1812 these collections were bought up for the university by the elector and he was granted use of the collection for life. Langguth persevered in Wittenberg in the storms of 1813 and was killed by typhus the following year.
