Johann Daniel Titius

Johann Daniel Titius (also: Tietz, Tietze ; * January 2, 1729 in Konitz ; † December 11, 1796 in Wittenberg ) was a German scholar who dealt with astronomy , physics and biology , among other things . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Titius ".

Life

Initially he attended school in his hometown. After the early death of his father, Titius was raised by his uncle Michael Christoph Hanow , who was a professor in Danzig, and moved to the local high school. After attending grammar school in Gdansk, he began studying at the University of Leipzig , where he obtained the degree of master's degree in 1752 (with a master's thesis on moonlight) and was accepted as a private lecturer at the philosophical faculty. In 1756 he took over the professorship of lower mathematics at the University of Wittenberg and in 1761 took over the public lectures on physics for Georg Matthias Bose, who was absent from Wittenberg . Since Bose did not return, Titius received the physics professorship from the Polish king and Saxon electors. He also taught philosophy, natural theology, and natural law. In 1768 he became rector of the university. He turned down offers for a professorship in Göttingen, Helmstedt, Kiel and Danzig.

As a scholar he was very versatile. Today he is best known for the formulation of a formula from 1766, which mathematically describes a certain regularity in the mean distances of the planets from the sun and is known as the Titius-Bode series . As a physicist, he was a supporter of René Descartes and emphasized the role of the experiment, but was also interested in economic applications. In particular, he dealt with thermometers. In biology he followed Carl von Linné . Edited scientific journals (and sponsored reprints of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions)

He also wrote a complete German translation of Michel de Montaigne's essays in just one year (1753–1754) , which for a long time was recognized as the best, at least until 1998, when the new translation by Hans Stilett appeared. He undertook his translations of Montaigne and the Discours sur les sciences et les arts by Jean-Jacques Rousseau at the suggestion of Johann Christoph Gottsched . He wrote theological and philosophical essays in the sense of the natural religion of the Enlightenment period and historical works (history of West Prussia, history of the Elbe crossings near Wittenberg).

He was a member of numerous academies such as the natural research societies in Berlin and Danzig, the Leipzig Economic Society . (1767) and the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt and in the literary field of the German Societies in Jena, Erlangen, Leipzig and Bernburg and co-founder of the Wittenberg German Society.
