Christian August Siegfried Hoffmann (born July 3, 1760 in Freiberg ; † March 15, 1813 there) was a German mineralogist , gemstone inspector and administrator of the academic mineral defeat in Freiberg.

Life

Hoffmann studied mineralogy in Freiberg with Abraham Gottlob Werner . After his lectures, he wrote the “Handbook of Mineralogy” in two volumes between 1811 and 1813. This work was continued in the III. and Volume IV by August Breithaupt between 1816 and 1818.

Together with Karsten, Hoffmann was editor in 1792 of the “News from the Mineral Cabinet of the Provost of Ohaim [sic.] According to Werner's system”, which is illustrated by numerous examples. From 1800 to 1804 he was the sole publisher of the "Bergmännische Journal", which he had previously published together with Alexander Wilhelm Köhler .

Hoffmann, together with Abraham Gottlob Werner, is also considered to be the first to describe the mineral mellite , for which he recorded a brief description in the "Bergmännischer Journal" (Volume 2, Volume 1) next to Inspector Werner's mineral system under the synonym honey stone in 1789 .

Individual evidence

  1. The "News from the Mineral Cabinet of the Provost of Ohaim ..." is a misspelling of the source "General German Biography". In fact, it is about the mineral cabinet of Carl Eugenius Pabst von Ohain , see also the commemorative publication for the centenary of the Königl. Saxon.
