After his untimely death in 1729, he received training in mining, smelting and mining. One of his teachers was Johann Friedrich Henckel . Like his father, he entered the service of the Saxon mining administration. After the death of the chief miner Friedrich Wilhelm von Oppel , Pabst von Ohain was appointed miner captain in Freiberg in 1769. Together with the chief miner Adam Friedrich von Ponickau , he took over the office of curator of the Freiberg Mining Academy . He exercised both functions until his death, and was succeeded by Carl Wilhelm Benno von Heynitz . Ohain was also a member of the academies in Turin and St. Petersburg. Ohain was the author of several works on mineralogy.

In 1775, Pabst von Ohain appointed the former student Abraham Gottlob Werner to the chair of mineralogy and appointed him to be the mining academy inspector.

Ohain owned an extensive mineral collection, which he made available to the Bergakademie for training purposes. After his death, the collection was acquired by António de Araújo e Azevedo, 1st conde da Barca. Werner cataloged the 7,500 pieces that were shipped from Portugal to Rio de Janeiro in 1807 and formed the basis of the Brazilian National Museum.
