Friedrich Wilhelm von Oppel (born May 4, 1720 in Krebs ; † February 4, 1769 in Freiberg ) was the Saxon chief miner in Freiberg and co-founder of the Freiberg Mining Academy .

Live and act

The son of the manor owner Bernhard Wilhelm von Oppel (1669–1738) on Krebs near Pirna and his wife Justine Christiane, née. von Heynitz (1688–1768) first began studying law , but quickly found his passion for mining and metallurgy in the Ore Mountains . In 1743 he became an assessor in the Freiberg Oberbergamt , in 1755 he became a mining captain and in 1763 he was promoted to head of this facility and became chief miner. In this position he worked hard to promote mining in the Ore Mountains after the Seven Years' War .

Together with Friedrich Anton von Heynitz , he founded the Bergakademie Freiberg in 1765 as the world's first mining science university and became its first director. The foundation of his private collection of minerals, books and mining models formed the basis for the collections of the Bergakademie.

From 1764 Oppel was married to Juliana Sophia von Hartitzsch (1734-1813). The children of the marriage include the later director of the Meissen porcelain factory, Carl Wilhelm von Oppel (1767–1833), and the statesman Julius Wilhelm von Oppel (1766–1832). Oppel died in Freiberg in 1769 and was buried in the cloister of the cathedral there.
