Christian Host (born February 20, 1970 in Vienna ) is an Austrian Byzantinist , Graecist and Latinist .

Life

After graduating from the Bundesrealgymnasium Berndorf, he studied classical philology, Middle and Neo-Latin, history and theology at the University of Vienna . 2001 doctorate host sub auspiciis Praesidentis Rei publicae with a three-volume dissertation on the Latin translation department in the Byzantine Emperor firm under the dynasties of Comnenus and the Angels (1081-1204). Before that he had already started to work on the then Byzantine Commission (now the Byzantine Research Department of the Institute for Medieval Research) of the Austrian Academy .

He is particularly concerned with the critical edition of Greek and Latin documents and texts (Patriarchal Register of Constantinople, Latros- Chartular , Easter Chronicle ), questions of codicology and palaeography , but also the continued effect of the Greek and Byzantine heritage in humanism , especially in Central and Eastern Europe Eastern Europe. Host also combined these research topics in his post-doctoral thesis in Byzantine Studies, “The Greek Manuscripts of the Bibliotheca Corviniana of the Austrian National Library . Provenance and Reception in Greek Humanism of the Early 16th Century ”(Vienna 2010).

At the Byzantine Research Department, he heads the “Language, Text and Writing” research area and is also co-editor of the Yearbook of Austrian Byzantine Studies .
