Christian Genest (born January 11, 1957 in Chicoutimi , Canada ) is a Canadian professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill University (Montréal, Canada) and Chair of the Canada Research Chair in Stochastic Dependence Modeling. He is the author of numerous research papers in multivariate analysis, nonparametric statistics, extreme value theory, and multi-criteria analysis . In 2011 he received the gold medal of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) for his scientific achievements. In 2015 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada .

Life

Genest was born in Canada. He studied mathematics at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (B.Sp.Sc., 1977) and the Université de Montréal (M.Sc., 1978) before attending the University of British Columbia (Ph.D., 1983) PhD in Statistics. His doctoral thesis "Towards a Consensus of Opinion", which he wrote under the supervision of James V. Zidek, earned him the 1984 Pierre Robillard Award of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC).

After receiving his doctorate, Christian Genest was a postdoctoral fellow and visiting junior professor at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA) from 1983 to 1984 . From 1984 to 1987 he was an assistant professor at the chair of statistics and actuarial science at the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, ON). He was then appointed to Université Laval (Québec, QC), where he became an associate professor in 1989 and professor in 1993. In 2010 he moved to McGill University (Montréal, QC) and was director of the Institut des sciences mathématiques du Québec from 2012 to 2015.

Services

Christian Genest is known for developing statistical models and inference methods to investigate dependencies of variables with the help of copulas . Among other things, he invented various techniques to select, estimate and check copula-based models using rank-based methods. His methodological contributions to multidimensional analysis and extreme value theory find numerous practical applications and a. in finance, insurance, and hydrology .

Throughout his academic career, Christian Genest has made significant contributions on how to use and link expert opinions, as well as pair comparison methods that are used to establish rankings in multi-criteria analysis. He is the author and co-author of over 200 scientific publications, more than half of which have appeared in peer-reviewed journals. Part of his work also deals with the history of statistics and scientometrics . Christian Genest has given over 300 invited lectures, including over 75 presentations for the general public.

Honourings and prices

Christian Genest was the first to receive the CRM-SSC award in 1999. In the same year he received the SUMMA Research Award from the Université Laval . In 2011 the Statistical Society of Canada awarded him the most prestigious award, the Gold Medal “in recognition of his notable contributions to multivariate analysis and nonparametric statistics, in particular for the development of models and inference methods to investigate stochastic dependencies, to combine expert opinions with multi-criteria decision-making processes and their applications in various areas such as finance, insurance and hydrology. ”Christian Genest has been a Fellow of the American Statistical Association since 1996, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics since 1997 and an honorary member of the Association des statisticiennes et statisticiens du Québec since 2012. In 2015 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and in 2019 he received the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Award .

voluntary work

Christian Genest has served the statistical community in many ways. Among other things, he was President of the Statistical Society of Canada (2007–2008) and President of the Association des statisticiennes et statisticiens du Québec (2005–2008). He served for several years on Statistics Canada's Statistical Methods Advisory Board and on the editorial board of several scientific journals, including The Canadian Journal of Statistics (1988-2003), the Journal de la Société française de statistique (1999-2008) and the Journal of Multivariate Analysis (2003-). He was also editor-in-chief of The Canadian Journal of Statistics (1998-2000), editor-in-chief of Journal of Multivariate Analysis (2015-2019) and guest editor of various books and special editions of scientific journals, including two in Insurance: Mathematics and Economics (2005, 2009). His many contributions earned him the Order of Merit of the Statistical Society of Canada in 1997.

Others

Christian Genest is married to Johanna Nešlehová, associate professor of statistics at McGill University (Montréal, QC). One of his sisters, Sylvie Genest, is a music professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal. He has four children, his son Vincent Genest is a mathematical physicist and author of many scientific papers.
