In 1857 he and his father bought a trading house in Windsheim . After the death of his first wife in 1870, he married her cousin, Anna Maria Johanna Ott (1845–1921). Both marriages had a total of twelve children. After the father-in-law Ott retired, Hornschuch became the sole owner of the textile house in Fürth in 1872. While the company had previously only employed hand weavers working from home, Hornschuch founded a mechanical weaving mill in Forchheim in 1873 , which grew rapidly and soon started operating branches in Erlangen, Brand, Marktredwitz and Wunsiedel as well as associated spinning mills in Forchheim, Kulmbach and Mainleus. Until shortly before the First World War, the company had grown to around 5000 employees.

In 1886 he was appointed councilor of commerce and honorary citizen of Weißenstadt , where he employed many house weavers. In 1889 he was elected to the board of the district council. From 1889 he was a member of the administrative board of the Gewerbemuseum in Fürth, and from 1892 he was a member of the committee for increasing river and canal shipping in Bavaria.

Hornschuch was not only characterized by its entrepreneurial spirit but also by great social commitment. In Fürth and Forchheim he has made numerous foundations for social purposes, including a. for the Fürth Volksbildungsheim and the school dental clinic there, for the girls' school in Forchheim and for various churches. on July 27, 1906, he was awarded the silver Prince Regent Luitpold Medal, and on January 1, 1908, with the Order of Merit IV Class of St. Michael . He also became an honorary citizen of Forchheim. The Hornschuch Promenade in Fürth was named after him.

His company was converted into a family stock company in 1905 . A son from his second marriage, Fritz Hornschuch (1874–1955), continued the company. The son Konrad Hornschuch (1864–1943) from his first marriage founded his own weaving mill in Urbach in 1905, from which the Konrad Hornschuch AG , now based in Weißbach, developed.
