Christian Hellbach

Christian Hellbach (born July 20, 1959 in Mexico City ) is a German diplomat . He has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chile since 2019 .

Life

After graduating from the German School in Bogotá in 1979, Hellbach began studying law , which he completed in 1985 with the second state examination in law. After that he was between 1985 and 1989 as a research assistant at the University of Konstanz worked and received its approval in 1989 as a lawyer . At the same time in 1989 his doctorate to Dr. jur. at the University of Konstanz with a dissertation on the topic of public interests and company property: the social function of the constitutional guarantee of company property .

career

After a two-year activity from 1990 to 1992 as a consultant at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety , he began the preparatory service for the senior foreign service in 1992 and joined the Foreign Office in 1993 . After a brief assignment at the embassy in Uzbekistan and the headquarters of the Foreign Office, he worked at the permanent representation at the international organizations in Geneva from 1994 to 1997 and then again at the Foreign Office in Berlin. In 2000, Hellbach moved to the embassy in Serbia and, after an interim assignment in the Foreign Office between 2003 and 2007, worked at the embassy in Colombia from 2007 to 2010 before he was head of division at the Foreign Office between 2010 and 2014 .

In 2014 Hellbach succeeded Ulrike Maria Knotz as ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Christiane Hohmann was appointed his successor in 2016 . He moved back to the head office in Berlin, where he held the post of special coordinator for the Western Balkans, Turkey and the EFTA countries in Department 2 until 2019.

In August 2019 he took over the office of German Ambassador in Santiago / Chile from Rolf Peter Gottfried Schulze .
