Christian Hesse (born August 2, 1960 in Oberkirchen ) is a German mathematician. He teaches mathematical statistics at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

Hesse studied at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen from 1979 and from 1983 as a Fulbright scholar at Indiana University . From 1984 to 1987 he was a research fellow at Harvard University , where he received his doctorate in June 1987 with Herman Chernoff . He then taught at the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley until 1991 . Since December 1991 he has been Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the Institute for Stochastics and Applications at the University of Stuttgart .

Among other things, he published books on applied probability theory . In 2009, his book The Little Basics of Clear Thinking was published: 22 thinking tools for a better life , which offers an entertaining introduction to mathematical thinking.

On June 5, 2012, Hesse was summoned as an expert before the Federal Constitutional Court to testify in an oral hearing about electoral aspects of the federal election law , such as the negative voting weight .

Chess is one of his hobbies . In 2006 he published the book Expeditions into the Chess World , which is also available in English and Spanish editions. In 2015 the book Damenopfer was published. The chess historian Edward Winter accused Christian Hesse, citing examples, of using the work of others as a chess author and either not or only incompletely specifying this.

Christian Hesse is married to the communication and political scientist Andrea Römmele and has two children.
