Christian IV (Oldenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Christian IV of Oldenburg (documented 1302–1323) was Count of Oldenburg . He was the eldest son of Count Johann II from his first marriage to Elisabeth von Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

Life

In 1313 Christian IV certified his willingness to share his rule over Oldenburg with his half-brother Conrad I (attested 1313-1347), who was mentioned for the first time in this document . In doing so, he presumably corresponded to a wish of his father, who wanted the eldest son from his second marriage to have an equal share in the rule. However, Konrad did not seal and authenticate until 1324, after Christian's death. From 1316 he also shared his rule with his brother Johann III. Both referred to themselves as duces Frisonum in 1317, while Christian called himself ductor Frisonum in 1318 , for example "patron of the Frisians" to document claims to power over the Frisian lands of Östringen and Rüstringen . However, there was no actual, concrete Oldenburg rule over these areas.

Christian was married to Hedwig von Altbruchhausen. A daughter Jutta emerged from this marriage, who is documented as prioress in Blankenburg Monastery from 1348 to 1367 . The succession in the county was by Johann III. and Konrad I. secured.
