Christian Juel (mathematician)

Christian Sophus Juel (born January 25, 1855 in Randers , † January 24, 1935 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish mathematician who dealt with geometry.

Life

Juel was the son of a judge, but lost his father when he was one year old. He went to school in Svendborg and studied from 1871 at the Polytechnic in Copenhagen and from 1876 mathematics at the University of Copenhagen . In 1879 he graduated and in 1885 he received his doctorate with a geometrical work (Inledning i de imaginaer linies og den imaginaer plans geometry). From 1894 he taught at the Polytechnic, where he received a full professorship in 1897. He also taught at the university.

He worked on projective geometry (where he started from Karl von Staudt and independently came to similar results as Corrado Segre ), algebraic curves, polyhedra and oval surfaces. In addition to a monograph on projective geometry, he also published several school books. In 1897 he discovered that the Dane Caspar Wessel was the first to publish a geometric interpretation of complex numbers.

From 1889 to 1915 he was editor of the Matematisk Tidsskrift. In 1929 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Oslo and in 1925 an honorary member of the Mathematical Association.

He married the daughter of the mathematics and astronomy professor Thorvald Nicolai Thiele .
