Christian Kandlbauer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian Kandlbauer (born November 6, 1987 , † October 21, 2010 in Graz ) was an Austrian who received the world's first bionic arm prosthesis.

Life

Kandlbauer completed compulsory school and then began an apprenticeship as a car mechanic. In the course of a test of courage, he climbed a power pole in autumn 2005 and got caught in a 20,000-volt circuit. As a result, his left arm with the shoulder joint and the right arm with the elbow joint were amputated.

After the accident, Kandlbauer received two prostheses in 2007. The one for the right arm was a "standard prosthesis" that had two electrodes and three joints. It was controlled with the biceps and triceps of the upper arm stump. The one for the left arm was a bionic prosthesis with six electrodes and three joints. This was controlled by the nerves that were originally also responsible for the arm. For this purpose, these nerves were connected to several chest muscles in an operation, so control is only possible by means of "memory" (thoughts) and simultaneous (simultaneous) movement. The brain impulses of the nerves transferred to the breast are then recorded via sensors, evaluated and forwarded to the bionic prosthesis.

On October 19, 2010, he had a serious accident with his car and as a result died on October 21 in the LKH Graz .
