life and work

Christian Lindow was born in Altenburg in Thuringia and grew up there. In 1961 he left the GDR and studied sculpture at the Werkkunstschule in Mannheim from 1962 to 1965 . He came to Bern through the artist Herbert Distel , where he met his future wife, with whom he had a daughter in 1981. At the end of the 1960s he settled entirely in Bern and gave up his second place of residence in Mannheim. Lindow traveled to India and Nepal (1973–74), Morocco (1975 and 1977) and North and Central America (1976–77 and 1978). In 1990 Lindow died as a result of an accident.

After a classic training as a sculptor, Lindow started working non-representationally in 1967 and made objects out of wood and polyester. After doing some conceptual works, he began drawing and painting in 1973. In addition to portraits, he also painted landscapes, mountains, house facades, still lifes with flowers and an extensive series of pictures with plums.

In 1982 Christian Lindow took part in documenta 7 in Kassel. In 1988 Lindow exhibited large-format plum pictures in the Kunsthalle Bern . Retrospectives took place in 1995 and 1996 at the Kunstmuseum Winterthur , the Lindenau Museum (Altenburg), and the Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds .
