The Princess Ragnhild Coast ( Norwegian Prinsesse Ragnhild Kyst ) is part of the coast of the Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It was named after the Norwegian princess Ragnhild (1930–2012), the daughter of King Olav V and Märtha of Sweden .

geography

The coastline is bounded by the meridians 20 ° East and 34 ° East. In the West, Princess Ragnhild Coast borders the Princess Astrid Coast , the east by the Prince Harald Coast . Off the coast lies the Riiser-Larsen Sea with the Roi-Baudouin Ice Shelf and east of the meridian 30 ° East is the Cosmonaut Sea , both marginal seas of the Southern Ocean .

The coast is to the east of Cape Sedow , an ice cape on the Princess Astrid Coast, and to the west of the Riiser Larsen Peninsula , which forms the eastern boundary of the Vestvika Bay .

In the area there is the Pakistani research station Jinnah near the coast, as well as the Belgian Princess Elisabeth Station and the Japanese summer station Asuka in the hinterland. The first Belgian Antarctic station, Roi Baudouin, was also in the area.

history

The Princess Ragnhild Coast was first set foot on March 5, 1933 by Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen , a Norwegian polar explorer . He wanted to advance by ship from the Proclamation Island to the Antarctic Peninsula , but this was prevented by the breaking of the ice and meant the death of many sailors.
