Christian Ludwig (conductor)

Christian Ludwig (born May 2, 1978 in Cologne ) is a former German violinist and current conductor.

life and career

Ludwig grew up as the son of a Korean singer and a German piano professor in Cologne.

In 1995 he began studying the violin at the Cologne University of Music , which he attended at the age of twelve. He later continued this at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and at the same time studied chamber music with the Alban Berg Quartet .

Due to persistent pain in his left hand and a subsequent diagnosis of focal dystonia , Ludwig finally ended his professional career as a violinist in 1999 .

In 2001 Ludwig turned to a new musical field and studied orchestral and choral conducting with Klaus Arp at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts . This was followed by postgraduate studies in conducting with Sir Colin Davis and Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music in 2005. Ludwig received further musical influences from master classes with Mario Venzago , Dmitri Kitajenko , Yan Pascal Tortelier and George Hurst .

After completing his studies, he switched to the Cologne Chamber Orchestra in 2008 , where he was employed as conductor and artistic director until 2011. After that, Ludwig led the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra in South Korea from 2011 to 2013 . Since 2018 he has been a permanent conductor with the orchestra of the state government in Düsseldorf. Ludwig has also been leading the Aachen student orchestra as a conductor since the 2019 summer semester .

As a soloist and conductor, Christian Ludwig has already given concerts in many well-known concert venues, including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées , the Prinzregententheater , the Seoul National Opera , the Cologne Philharmonic and the Tonhalle Düsseldorf .
