Prince Christian Victor of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg , full name: Prince Christian Victor Albert Ludwig Ernst Anton of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (born April 14, 1867 at Windsor Castle , Berkshire , England ; † October 29, 1900 in Pretoria , South Africa ) was a member of the British royal family and officer .

Life

Prince Christian Victor was the eldest son of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein (1831-1917) and his wife Princess Helena of Great Britain and Ireland (1846-1923), third daughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland and Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . He was called "Christle" in the family .

Prince Christian Victor was educated at Wellington College , Magdalen College , Oxford University, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . He was the first member of the British royal family to attend a public college. Wellington College was founded by his grandfather, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1859. He was also the captain of the cricket team and is the only member of the royal family to practice the sport.

Prince Christian Victor was a British officer in the King's Royal Rifle Corps . He fought under Lord Kitchener in the suppression of the Mahdi uprising in 1898 in Sudan , at the Battle of Omdurman . He also took part in the Ashanti expedition to Ghana . In 1900 he served in the Second Boer War under Lord Roberts .

He died on 29 October 1900 in Pretoria on malaria and was buried there.
