Albert of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg , full name: Prince Albert John Charles Frederick Arthur George of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (born February 26, 1869 at Frogmore House , Windsor , Berkshire , England ; † April 27, 1931 in Primkenau ), was a member of the British royal family and from 1921 to 1931 head and (titular) duke of Schleswig-Holstein.

Life

Prince Albert was the second son of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1831-1917) and his wife Princess Helena of Great Britain and Ireland (1846-1923), the third daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . Like his older brother, Prince Christian Victor , Prince Albert was destined for a military career. However, while his brother was in the British Army, Albert served in the Prussian Army and was promoted to lieutenant colonel . During the First World War he did not serve at the front.

On February 22, 1921 he succeeded his cousin, the younger brother of the last German Empress Auguste Viktoria , Duke Ernst Günther of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1863-1921), as head and (titular) Duke of Schleswig-Holstein. Since Duke Albert died unmarried, the line Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg became extinct in the male line . His successor as head of the House of Schleswig-Holstein was Duke Friedrich Ferdinand of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg .

Illegitimate daughter

Valerie Marie zu Schleswig-Holstein (born April 3, 1900 in Liptovský Mikuláš , Hungary ; † August 14, 1953 in Villefranche-sur-Mer , suicide) was born as Valerie Marie Schwalb. Duke Albert recognized Valerie as his daughter ten days before his death, her mother was Baroness Berta Marie-Madeleine von Wernitz. Her first marriage was to Ernst Johann Wagner.
