Christian Wellmann

Christian Wellmann (born August 25, 1948 in Hamburg ; † November 13, 2013 in Bellapais , Cyprus ) was a German peace researcher and peace activist. In 1971, together with Hanne-Margret Birckenbach, he founded the journal Antimilitarismus-Information , which he edited for a long time and for which he wrote numerous articles.

Life

After graduating from high school, Wellmann refused to serve in the Bundeswehr . He then studied sociology at the University of Frankfurt , then in 1977 he went to Berlin as a research associate in the project network of the "Berghof Foundation for Conflict Research", until 1981 he worked for the Berghof Foundation. From 1979 to 1987 he researched and taught in the political science department of the Free University of Berlin . In 1988 he received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on "Disarmament and Employment - A Conflict of Goals?" In 1988 Wellmann went to Frankfurt, where he worked as a research assistant at the Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research. From 1989 to 1996 he was co-editor of the "Jahrbuch Frieden", eight volumes of which have been published by Beck-Verlag . Since the 1990s he has been involved in setting up the Schleswig-Holstein Institute for Peace Studies in Kiel, where he was deputy director and research coordinator until 2010. Wellmann was married to Hanne-Margret Birckenbach since 1984.

Death and burial

Wellmann died surprisingly shortly after a conference in Cyprus, which he had helped organize. He was buried in Hamburg on November 28th.
