Christian Wilhelm Büttner (born February 26, 1716 in Wolfenbüttel , † October 8, 1801 in Jena ) was a German naturalist and chemist.

In 1758 Büttner was appointed to the chair for natural history and chemistry at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Göttingen . There he was one of the teachers of the writer and physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg , who had studied with Büttner in Göttingen since 1763. Büttner had an extensive collection of natural objects, which the Göttingen professor and librarian Christian Gottlob Heyne acquired for the university in 1773, thus creating the basis for the Academic Museum.

He sold his huge library and other collections for 40,000 thalers, a pension and free apartment in the castle to Duke Carl August of Saxony . The Büttnersche Library is one of Goethe next to the Academic Library, the Palace Library and the Bude Rischen to the four major libraries Jenas . Shortly after his death, Goethe wrote about the collector Büttner:

“The peculiarities of this strange man can be summed up in a few words: unlimited inclination towards scientific possession, limited love for accuracy and complete lack of a generally over-arching spirit. To increase his sizeable library, he used the pension that was given to him annually for the amount owed in the main library. Several rooms in the side building of the castle were entered into his apartment, and these were all occupied and occupied. He ordered books at every auction, and when old Schloßvoigt, his commissioner, once revealed to him that an important book had already been published twice, it was said, on the other hand, that a good book could not be had enough.
