history
Native of the area were the Shawnee - Indians . From 1775 the first settlers from Europe came to the place. When it became known that the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad would run through the place, the city was founded. The settlers William Noble and Hugh McClarron established several manufacturing companies and the place was first called McClarronville in 1844 , shortly afterwards the Zercher Hotel opened. As the inhabitants of the place name McClarronville could not make friends, he was in 1847 in honor of Christiana Noble, the first wife of the settler William Noble in Christiana renamed.
On September 11, 1851, Christiana was the scene of unrest, now known as Christiana Riot (Christiana uprising), which gave the region great national attention. The occasion was fleeing slaves who defended the residents with firearms and killed the slave owner. The southerners demanded that those responsible be hanged who had been charged with treason for having engaged in acts of war in the United States. After the first defendant was acquitted, the government closed the case. The trial was the first nationwide challenge to the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 , which was rarely used in the Northern States . In memory of the Christiana uprising, an obelisk was set up in the village .
At the beginning of the 21st century, the residents of Christiana make their living primarily through agricultural and tourist facilities. The place is known as a quiet, rural residential area and is not interested in intensive construction activity or expansion.
