Christiane Druml

Christiane Druml (born May 4, 1955 in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer and bioethicist.

Since 2007 she has been chairwoman of the bioethics commission at the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria (Austrian Bioethics Commission). From October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2015, she was also Vice Rector for Clinical Affairs at the Medical University of Vienna . Since 2012 she has been director of the Josephinum - Collections and History of Medicine. In January 2016 she was entrusted with the management of the UNESCO Chair for Bioethics at the Medical University of Vienna.

Life

After completing her education at the Akademisches Gymnasium Vienna , Christiane Druml studied law at the University of Vienna . During her studies she was a study assistant at the Institute for Civil Law with Rudolf Welser . After her doctorate in 1978 and the court year, she worked as a university assistant at the Institute for Constitutional and Administrative Law at Felix Ermacora . Subsequently, she was responsible for the “Austro-French Center for Encounters from European Countries with Different Economic and Social Systems” at the Vienna Institute for International Economic Comparisons. From 1981 Christiane Druml was entrusted with the corporate law of group investments and the art budget in the general management of Creditanstalt-Bankverein . From 1989 to 1992 she was managing director of Parexel Austria, the former AFB-Arzneimittelforschung, an international medical contract research institute. In 1992 Christiane Druml was appointed managing director of the ethics committee at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, now the Medical University of Vienna , which she held until October 1, 2011. From October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2015, she was also Vice Rector for Clinical Affairs at the Medical University of Vienna.

Christiane Druml has been Director of the Josephinum - Medical Collections and Head of the Institute for Ethics, Collections and History of Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna since October 2015. Since January 2016 she has held the UNESCO Chair for Bioethics at the Medical University of Vienna.

In April 2016 the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases was founded, at which Christiane Druml heads the ethics working group.

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , after Martin Sprenger left , she was appointed to the advisory team of the Coronavirus Task Force in the Ministry of Health .

It gained an international reputation, among other things, through its commitment to compliance with transparent medical research that is subject to the highest ethical principles. It also pursued these goals by establishing the “Vienna Initiative to Save European Academic Research” (VISEAR) in 2005, which was supposed to focus on the importance of non-commercially funded clinical research within Europe. Christiane Druml is married and has three children.

Bioethics Commission at the Federal Chancellery

In 2007 Christiane Druml was appointed by the then Federal Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer as chairman of the bioethics commission at the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria, the national bioethics commission of Austria. This function was confirmed for a further term of office in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2017.
