Christina Hull Paxson (born February 6, 1960 ) is an American economist .

Career, research and teaching

Paxson studied at Swarthmore College , where she as a 1982 Bachelor of Arts graduate . She then moved to Columbia University , where she completed her master's degree from the Columbia Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1985 and her Ph.D. Degree in economics. She then went to Princeton University as an assistant professor , and from 1994 she was an associate professor at the university. In 1997 she was appointed full professor and subsequently held various positions at the University-based Business Scholl Woodrow Wilson School . In 2012, she accepted an appointment from Brown University , which made her the university's 19th president. In February 2017, she was re-elected President of Brown University for another five years.

Paxson's work and research focuses on labor economics and health economics , the factors influencing health and welfare, especially on children. In doing so, she focused on the one hand on Africa and the AIDS problem there and on the other hand on the effects of Hurricane Katrina .

Paxson was a co-editor of the American Economic Review from 1996 to 2000 , and from 2004 to 2012 she was senior editor of the periodical The Future of Children .

Honors

In 2003, together with Anne Case and Darren Lubotsky , Paxson received the Arrow Prize , which is awarded for outstanding work in health economics. In 2018 she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Williams College .
