Life

Christine Edmaier is a freelance architect and member of the Association of German Architects (BDA). She then became Vice President of the Berlin Chamber of Architects in 2009. Edmaier has been President of the Berlin Chamber of Architects since 2013.

Edmaier studied architecture from 1981 to 1987 at the Berlin University of the Arts , today's UdK. During her studies she spent a year in Italy at the Università Iuav di Venezia (IUAV). After completing her studies, she first set up an architecture office with Christian Kennerknecht. As early as 1989 she received various teaching assignments at the Technical University of Berlin. Here she worked in the field of landscape planning and the field of urban and regional planning. She also did lectureships in the Ruhr area. Edmaier taught urban planning and urban design as a visiting professor at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art from 1996 to 1997.

Small canal island

In the 1990s, a new building area for 20,000 residents was built in the Allermöhe district of Hamburg: the Neuallermöhe West district. In 1994 Edmaier won first prize in the urban planning competition for two of her contributions. It was also successful in the implementation competition: According to its designs, 30 terraced houses, the Small Fleetinsel project , were implemented and completed by 1998. These are based on the watercourses in Allermöhe, so-called canals. Natural or artificially created drainage ditches in the Elbe marshland, i. H. the natural flood plain of the Elbe. The project was awarded the BDA Prize Hamburg (3rd place).

Fixed castle

In 1995, the community work began in a construction trailer in the Neu-Allermöhe-West development area in Hamburg. In 1996 Christine Edmaier won first prize in the competition for an ecumenical community center. The Feste Burg project was implemented between 1999 and 2001. It is characterized by its location in the green center of the new development area on a lake. The cladding of the building with massive rocks from the landmark is striking. The community center was honored with the BDA Prize Hamburg (2nd place) and the galvanizer prize.

On the game trail

The apartment building on Wildpfad in the Berlin-Grunewald district is a four-storey residential building with seven residential units, which was completed in 2009. The facade on the street side is characterized by the continuous railing of the terraces made of greenish glass. In contrast to this is the massive chimney made of sand-lime brick - due to its green color, it echoes the color of the railings. The house is characterized by its generosity - high windows, spacious terraces, representative staircase. However, it is heated exclusively by a heat pump and geothermal probe.

Presidency

As President of the Berlin Chamber of Architects, Christine Edmaier has a decisive influence on the architectural discourse in Berlin's public.

She advocates a pluralistic appearance of architecture in Berlin - and with it an improved competitive system. This can be seen in her criticism of the monotonous design around the main train station and the planning of the Europacity there, which she has repeatedly expressed in the media : The fact that this is very much oriented towards the Berlin perimeter block development "restricts the creative leeway and hardly leaves more complex designs with innovative access models and high density too, "said Edmaier in an interview with Tagesspiegel. She also sees the award of contracts to large investors as problematic. "A little more detail and diversity of the actors would certainly have been better in this place, (...) today one would probably plan it differently, more densely and socially more balanced."

Another focus of Edmaier's presidency is the good representation of the Chamber of Architects and the profession in public. For example, the organization of the annual " Architecture Day " by the Chamber of Architects, on whose advisory board Edmaier sits, should be mentioned. Edmaier is also a member of the "Communication and Media" working group of the Chamber of Architects. Among other things, this promotes "high-quality planning and architectural services in society, especially at institutions, ministries, foundations and associations" and works on the "development of concepts for architecture communication".

As President of the Chamber of Architects, Edmaier works with the Berlin Senate Administration. As an expert, for example, she was a member of the "Technical Working Group on School Room Quality". This was set up in 2016 by the Berlin Senator for Education Sandra Scheeres and Senator for Urban Development Katrin Lompscher . Due to the increasing number of pupils, around 30 new schools will be needed in Berlin over the next few years. The result report of the working group is a plea for modern school building as a place of learning and living. Edmaier also advocates open competition when building new schools, so that smaller offices in particular can also participate. This is the only way to use the "potential of the profession to find urban planning optimized, economical and future-oriented concepts", says Edmaier.
