Christlieb Benedict Funk (also: Christlieb Benedikt Funck , Latinized Christophilus Benedictus Funccius ; * July 5, 1736 in Hartenstein ; † April 10, 1786 in Leipzig ) was a German physicist and mathematician.

Life

Christlieb Benedict was the son of the then city cantor, later deacon in Hartenstein and pastor in Beutha Gottlieb Funk and his wife, the only daughter of M. Christian Friedrich Sinner († 1721) in Weißbach. Thus he was a younger brother of Gottfried Benedict Funk . He studied at the University of Leipzig , where he obtained the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. From 1763 Funk was a teacher and cantor at the Leipzig Nikolaischule and in 1773 he became professor of physics at the Leipzig University.

In this role, he initially limited himself to theoretical physics, since he did not have the extensive collection of Johann Heinrich Winckler (1703–1770), and he also gave mathematical lectures. However, when the doctor Christian Ludwig (1749–1784), who had also given lectures on physics, died, Funk tried to buy up the physical collection for the university. In 1785, Elector Friedrich August I of Saxony finally approved the funds for the purchase of the collection, but refused an annual amount for its maintenance. Funk set up a physics lecture hall in four former monastery cells of the Paulinum .

The collection, which included devices for aerostatics for air pressure and vacuum tests, for mechanics, for optics and for electrostatics, was housed in the adjoining, provisionally prepared rooms. But Funk died before taking over the collection, so that only his successor Karl Friedrich Hindenburg (1741–1808) could use the collection. Funk also took part in the publication of the Leipzig magazine on natural history, mathematics and economics . He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University and was rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semester of 1781 .
