Christof Niehrs

Christof Niehrs (born April 29, 1962 in Berlin ) is a German biologist .

After graduating from high school in 1980, he studied biochemistry at the Free University of Berlin . In 1990 he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg on the subject of "Characterization and purification of tyrosyl protein sulfotransferase". After completing his doctorate, he moved to the University of California in Los Angeles as a postdoctoral fellow.

In 1994 he took over the management of the molecular embryology department at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg . In 1997 he completed his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg.

After his habilitation in 1997, at the age of 36, he was offered a C4 professorship for biochemistry at the Ruhr University in Bochum . This was followed by a call to the University of Karlsruhe and the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg.

In 2001 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg State Research Prize for his research on growth genes and the genetic causes of head formation . In 2003 he received the Leibniz Prize .

In 2011 Niehrs was appointed founding director of the Institute for Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB) in Mainz. In 2002 he was accepted into the Leopoldina . Since 2007 he has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . In 2016 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
