Christof Thoenes

Christof Thoenes (* 4. December 1928 in Dresden , † 21st October 2018 in Rome ) was a German art historian who primarily as a researcher on the Italian architecture of the 15th to 18th centuries and as an expert on the Renaissance , the St. Peter and Michelangelo was known. He spent many years of his academic life at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome.

Life

Thoenes studied art history in Berlin and Pavia . He received his doctorate in 1956 from the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on Giovanni Antonio Veneroni , a late baroque architect from Lombardy . In 1973 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin, and since 1990 he has taught as an honorary professor in Hamburg . He lived in Rome, where he worked for many years at the Bibliotheca Hertziana .
