Christoph Friedrich von Walther

Theodor Christoph Friedrich Ludwig von Walther , misspelling and Christian Friedrich von Walther ( Russian Федор Андреевич (Христофор Фридрих) Вальтер * 20th May 1809 in Arnstadt † November 20, jul. / 2. December  1886 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a Russian Real State Councilor and Librarian at the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg .

Life

Career

The son of the merchant or holder of a weaving Heinrich Walther and Johanna Frederika Magdalena Beck, Christoph Friedrich Walther studied at the University of Leipzig and was just there in 1834 to Dr. phil. PhD . In the same year he went to St. Petersburg, where he worked as a teacher of ancient languages in various institutes . His students included many well-known writers, including Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev from 1835 to 1837 , who in 1878 publicly thanked his teacher for the love of ancient literature that he aroused in him. In the 1840s he took a job as a librarian in the imperial public library in St. Petersburg. Here he cataloged, supplemented and described the Elsevier collection, which he also published several times.

At his request, he received Russian citizenship in 1858.

He was honored with the Order of Saint Stanislaus II. Class in 1860 , received the Crown Order of Saint Stanislaus II. Class in 1863 and the Order of Saint Stanislaus I Class in 1883. As early as 1868 and 1870 he also had the Order of Saint Anne II. Class and the Order of Saint Vladimir III. Class received. At the latest when he was appointed to the Real Council of State in 1881, which was connected with an ennoblement , he also belonged to the hereditary nobility . Also in 1881 he was made an honorary member of the Latin Society of the University of Jena .

In addition, since 1849 he was a corresponding member of the Society for the History and Archeology of the Baltic Provinces of Russia .

family

Walther first married Sophia Egorova in the 1840s. Two sons emerged from this marriage, Alexander (* 1846), titular counselor in the Railway Ministry and August (* 1850), who did his doctorate in Berlin . After the divorce of the first marriage, he married Elvira Baronin von der Osten-Saken (1822-1897) in 1869 .
