Christoph Steinbeck (born February 20, 1966 in Neuwied ) is a German chemist .

Life

Steinbeck attended the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium in Neuwied from 1976 until his Abitur in 1985 . From 1986 he studied chemistry at the University of Bonn and completed his doctoral thesis in 1995 on the structure determination of organic compounds using NMR correlation experiments. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Tufts University in Medford, USA, with Clemens Richert, and completed his habilitation in organic chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in 2002 . At the same time he headed the research group for chemical informatics at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena. Between 2003 and 2007 he was group leader for molecular informatics at the Cologne University Bioinformatics Center (CUBIC) at the University of Cologne . From 2008 to 2016 he headed the "Cheminformatics and Metabolism" department at the European Bioinformatics Institute . Christoph Steinbeck has been Professor of Analytical Chemistry, Chemoinformatics and Chemometrics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena since March 2017 .

research

Steinbeck's research interests lie in the area of structure determination of metabolites and computer-aided metabolome analysis . He was one of the first chemists to develop open source software in chemistry. He initiated JChemPaint and founded the Chemistry Development Kit (CDK). During his time at the European Bioinformatics Institute , he headed the development of the Chemical Entities of Biological Interest ( ChEBI ) and MetaboLights databases.
