Christoph Bernhard de Vries (born December 4, 1974 in Hamburg ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 2011 to 2015 he was a member of the Hamburg Parliament . He was the CDU's direct candidate for the 2017 federal election in the Hamburg-Mitte constituency and entered the German Bundestag via the CDU state list.

Life and work

Christoph de Vries grew up in Hamburg and attended a Catholic primary school. After graduating from high school in 1994 at the also Catholic Sankt-Ansgar-Schule in Hamburg-Borgfelde , he studied sociology at the University of Hamburg with the minor subjects economics, political science and psychology. He completed his studies in 2002 with a degree in sociology.

From 2004 to 2015, de Vries was employed by the Hamburg tax authorities and most recently deputy head of department in the budget office. He was then released and worked as deputy managing director and head of strategy and communication for the CDU parliamentary group in Hamburg.

De Vries has been married since 2007. He is the father of two daughters and one son and is of Roman Catholic denomination.

De Vries joined the Junge Union and the CDU Hamburg in 1995 . He has been a member of the CDU Hamburg regional executive since 2007 and has been deputy regional chairman since June 2016. In addition, he has been district chairman of the CDU Hamburg-Mitte and local chairman of the CDU Hamburg-Hamm since 2015.

From 2001 to 2011, de Vries was a member of the district assembly in Hamburg-Mitte, where he was a district member of the CDU parliamentary group and spokesman for urban development from 2004 to 2008 and deputy parliamentary group chairman and spokesman for transport from 2008 to 2011.

After ten years as a district member of the Hamburg-Mitte district assembly, he was elected to the Hamburg parliament in eighth place in the Hamburg state election on February 20, 2011. He was the specialist spokesman for family, children, youth and chairman of the parliamentary committee of inquiry into the death of the girl Yagmur. From 2012 to 2013 he was also chairman of the CDU in the Chantal special committee. He was also a member of the European Committee and a member of the parliamentary group's executive committee.

In the 2015 general election, Christoph de Vries ran at number 5 on the state list, but lost his mandate. In November 2016, de Vries was elected as a direct candidate for the 2017 federal election with around 95% in the Hamburg-Mitte constituency. In December 2016 he was proposed by the electoral committee to third place on the Bundestag list and was able to prevail against a campaign candidate from the Bundestag member Herlind Gundelach . The list caused criticism from the CDU women's association: The CDU federal statute stipulates that at least one of the first three places should go to a woman. De Vries moved into the 19th German Bundestag through a compensation mandate .
