Christopher Achen

Christopher H. Achen (* 1946 ) is an American political scientist .

Career, research and teaching

Achen first studied at the University of California, Berkeley , where he graduated magna cum laude as a Bachelor of Arts in 1968 . He then continued his studies at Yale University , where he completed his Ph.D. -Education. He initially stayed at the college as an assistant professor , but returned to Berkeley the following year, where he later rose to become an associate professor . In 1985 he moved to the University of Chicago , where he was later appointed full professor . In 1990 he accepted a call from the University of Michigan , where he taught and researched until 2003. In 2004 he went to Princeton University , where he has held the Roger Williams Straus Chair in Social Sciences since 2005 .

In the mid-1980s, Achen was editor of the periodical Political Methodology , and he was also part of the editorial team of the journals Journal of Conflict Resolution , American Political Science Review , Political Analysis , Journal of Politics and International Studies Quarterly . He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1995 . He was the founding chairman of the Empirical Policy Research Section of the American Political Science Association . In 2007 he was recognized by the association for his life's work.

Achen's work focuses on democracy theory and the investigation of political behavior, and he is considered one of the leading figures in empirical political research. He dealt intensively with electoral research and econometric factors influencing voting behavior.
