Margo Hayes (born February 11, 1998 in Boulder , Colorado ) is an American sport climber who is successful in both difficult climbing and bouldering . She gained international fame when she became the first woman to climb a route classified as 9a + in 2017 .

Career

Margo Hayes was born and raised in Boulder, Colorado near the Rocky Mountains and spent her childhood and youth doing art, photography and gymnastics alongside school . She started climbing at the age of ten and joined Team ABC. In 2017, she successfully graduated from high school .

She took part in her first IFSC tournament, the Youth World Cup in Singapore , in 2012 and finished eighth. In 2014 she took first place in the Pan American Championship in Mexico City in bouldering and lead . In the same year, she also took part in her first World Cup for adults. The following year she won two silver medals at the World Youth Championship, and in 2016 she won gold twice. In the combination of disciplines created for the 2020 Olympic Games , she took third place at the 2017 World Youth Championships in Innsbruck.

She also climbs the rock with a high degree of difficulty. In 2016 she climbed 14 routes with a difficulty level of at least 8b +. She received international attention when, a year later, she succeeded in becoming the first woman to climb a climbing route classified as 9a + with La Rambla . In the same year she climbed the Route Realization and with it a second in this degree.

  • 2013: 7th place at the World Youth Championships in Boulder (Youth B)
  • 2014: first participation in the World Cup in bouldering, 18th place, winner of the PanAmerican Youth Championship in bouldering and lead (Youth A)
  • 2015: Vice youth world champion in lead and bouldering (Youth A)
  • 2016: Junior world champion in lead and bouldering (Juniors), first place at the US Sport Climbing Open National Championships
  • 2017: 3rd place at the youth world championship in the combination (Juniors), 2nd place in the lead and first place in bouldering at the PanAmerican Youth Championship (Juniors)
  • 2018: 10th place in bouldering at the 2018 World Climbing Championships
