La Rambla (climbing route)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The El Pati sector in Siurana

La Rambla or, more precisely, since variants of it were climbed earlier, La Rambla original , La Rambla extension or La Rambla directa was one of the most difficult climbing routes at the time of its first ascent . It is located in the Spanish climbing area Siurana ( Tarragona province ) in the El Pati sector . Its name was inspired by the famous La Rambla promenade in the center of Barcelona . It was climbed red point for the first time and thus officially first climbed in 2003 after a long practice phase by the Spanish sport climber Ramón Julián Puigblanque . The degree of difficulty was given by him as 9a + on the French rating scale .

characterization

The route La Rambla (original, extension or directa) is often simply called La Rambla in short. It is the sector El Pati the central route and was designed by Alexander Huber and Ramón Julián Puigblanque with bolts provided. The rating on the international French rating scale is 9a +. This classification was confirmed by the previous repeaters. The route is 45 meters high and overhangs more than 15 meters. 17 bolts are installed as intermediate security along the entire route . Depending on the selection of handles, the route has about 100 or more than 110 moves. The particular difficulty of the route is, on the one hand, that it is relatively long for a sport climbing route and, on the other hand, in the key point at the end of the route , which the climber has to overcome when he is exhausted after about 40 meters of climbing.

The individual sections of the route can be described as follows: The route begins with an approximately ten meter high, pushing-off and climbing technically demanding entry crack in the French level of difficulty 8a + / 8b. The entry crack is followed by around twenty meters of athletic wall climbing with difficult individual sections. This results in the French difficulty level 8c for the first 30 meters of the route. At the end of this passage there is a resting point where the arms can relax a little after the first 80 hits. This recovery only succeeds if the climber arrives at the resting point still somewhat relaxed. The key zone begins with a very small-grip, compact and strenuous overhanging wall climbing in the French level of difficulty Fb 8a . This is followed by a traverse which leads to a final fine grippy, five meters high zone.

controversy

Ramón Julián Puigblanque opened a discussion about their performance by claiming that Sharma and Marin had used the wrong holds and that the route was easier to climb. This is unusual because the free choice of holds is common practice in sport climbing . If a route becomes easier because repeaters discover better grips, it is usually devalued. Since neither Sharma nor Marin devalued the route and at least Sharma already had experience with this degree, the route remains officially 9a +. In the climbing scene, the question of what Puigblanque actually wanted with his accusation remains unresolved.

variants

In the course of time, before the first ascent of La Rambla, different variants of the La Rambla route were originally created, which are rated differently and differ in the course of the route or the route to be climbed. The variants are:

  • La Rambla drilled in by Alexander Huber and first climbed in 1994 after six weeks of work. This variant is originally identical to the Rambla above, but stops a few meters below, at a height of 40 meters. This route was also one of the most difficult climbing tours in the world in the 1990s. Rating according to the international French rating scale: 8c +
  • Variant de la Rambla, drilled in by Alexander Huber and by Dani Andrada , first ascended in 1996 Rotpunkt, is the least known line. It is 45 meters high and leads to the La Rambla original stand with a right-hand variant that bypasses the key point of La Rambla original. Rating according to the international French rating scale: 8c +
