Christopher Balme

Christopher B. Balme (* 1957 in New Zealand ) is a New Zealand theater scholar and director of the Institute for Theater Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Balme was born and raised in New Zealand, where he graduated from the University of Otago. Balme studied German , theater studies and cultural anthropology in Auckland , Otago and Munich , was an assistant in Munich, professor in Munich, and professor for theater studies in Mainz and Amsterdam . He has lived and worked in Germany since 1985. From 2004 to 2006 he headed the theater studies department at the University of Amsterdam. From 2007 to 2010 he was dean of the Faculty of History and Art at LMU Munich. Since 2006 Balme has been full professor for theater studies at the LMU Munich and director of the institute. The focus of work is the history of German-language theater, as well as intermediality , theater anthropology and post-colonial theater.

In addition to his work as director of the Institute for Theater Studies at LMU Munich, he is currently editor of the magazine Forum Modernes Theater . He has distinguished himself as the author of introductory works in theater studies. The Cambridge Introduction to Theater Studies (Cambridge 2008) was published in English ; The fifth edition of his German-language introduction to theater studies was published in 2014. In the lecture series of the Munich Doctoral Program For Literature And The Arts on the subject of "Mimesis" in the winter semester 2013/14, Balme will host the speakers.
